Madda Walabu University has begun Training for Researchers on Indigenous Knowledge Identification and Documentation which lasts from 9-10 February 2026. 


The training was opened officially by Dr. Bezabeh Wendimu Academic Research Community Engagement and Technology Transfer of Madda Walabu University and the Delegates of the President. In his opening remark he has emphasized as the Indigenous Knowledge Identification and Documentation task was given to all universities from Ministry of Education on various topics. Dr. Bezabeh underlined as the committee members should work hard in order to bear the responsibility of properly collecting the data and analysis them accordingly to the best of their knowledge.


Dr. Addisu Assefa Director of Research Ethics & Dissemination on his part indicated as our country has a lot of indigenous knowledge that hasn’t identified and documented yet. Therefore, researchers have the responsibility to work on this great initative to put into effect the responsibility given to us by Ministry of Education. 

Besides, Mr. Kassahun Alemseged Coordinator of Indigenous knowledge of the university clarifies the work that has been done so far with Ministry of Education and he has stated the eight major themes on which the research focused. These are:

1. Agriculture & Livelihood

2. Calendar , Astronomy, & Predication

3. Child Development

4. Climate Change & Variability

5. Prevention, Diagnostic & Treatment

6. Peace Building & Conflict Resolution

7. Natural Resource Management

8. Local Governance & Justice


Finally, the training continued in an engaging way where all the participants take part in role playing using the data collection tools.

The training will continue tomorrow by engaging the participants in discussion and reflection section to internalize issues related to Indigenous Knowledge Identification and Documentation tasks.
