Madda Walabu University has launched a comprehensive training program on Modern Research Reform Strategies for its academic and research staff, aiming to strengthen research capacity, enhance thematic research practices, and improve competitiveness in the global academic environment.
The training program commenced with a welcoming address delivered by the University's Academic, Research, Technology Transfer and Community Service Vice President, Dr. Bezabih Wondimu in his remarks, emphasized the critical importance of continuous professional development in research and innovation and he noted that the training is designed to equip academic staff with modern research approaches, improve the quality and relevance of research outputs, and align the University's research activities with national and international priorities. He further highlighted the vital role of thematic research in addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development.
Officially opening the training, Madda Walabu University President Dr. Berhanemeskel Tena underscored the growing significance of thematic research in the contemporary academic landscape, he explained that higher education institutions are increasingly expected to produce impactful research that addresses real-world problems and contributes to national development agendas. In addition, Dr. Berhanemeskel stated that such capacity-building initiatives are essential for enhancing researchers' competencies and ensuring that the University remains competitive and responsive within the rapidly evolving global research community.
As part of the training sessions, Dr. Serawit Handso, Chief Executive Officer for Research and Community Engagement Affairs at the Ministry of Education (MoE), delivered an extensive presentation on the concepts, principles, and practices of thematic research, he provided participants with valuable insights into thematic research planning, implementation, assessment mechanisms, and feedback systems.
Participants actively engaged in discussions following the presentation, raising questions and offering constructive comments on various aspects of thematic research implementation and evaluation. The interactive session provided an important platform for knowledge sharing, clarification of concepts, and the exchange of experiences among researchers and experts.
Besides, Mr. Kebede Gizaw Reform Desk at Ministry of Education on his part emphasized the key reform strategies at Ministry of Education, the role of professional development and research-methods training to improve research-to-policy translation and knowledge exchange. He also added as collaborative effort and partnership boosts the research undertaking at Higher Education Institutes.
The training program also featured a session on Writing Winning Grant Proposals, delivered by Dr. Alemayehu Abate, Director of Internationalization and Partnership at Madda Walabu University, his presentation outlined critical elements required for successful grant proposal development, including problem identification, project design, and alignment with donor priorities, budget preparation, and effective proposal writing techniques. He emphasized the importance of clarity, innovation, feasibility, and measurable impact in developing competitive grant applications.
According to organizers, the training will continue over the coming two days, covering additional topics related to research reform, thematic research development, and grant acquisition strategies.
